BASKETBALL – INDIA boosted their hopes of securing a berth in the Fiba Asia Cup 2025 following a 97-77 victory over Iraq last night in the final qualifying competition for West Asia, currently being hosted by Bahrain.
The Indians used a strong third-quarter performance, where they erupted for 32 points and held the Iraqis to 19, to turn a close game wide open. Their biggest lead of the night was 24 early in the final frame and they did well to close it out for the all-important win.
Muin Bek Hafeez led a balanced attack for India, who had six players in double figures. Hafeez scored 17 points, while Pranav Prince added 14, Harsh Dagar 13, and Arvind Muthu Krishnan 12.
Demario Mayfield and Mohammed Al Khafaji were the leading scorers for Iraq in the loss with 20 points apiece. Ihab Al Zuhairi chipped in with 13.
India, Iraq and hosts Bahrain are competing in the three-team event for two available places in this year’s continental showcase, which will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in August.
The Indians are back on the hardwood tonight at Khalifa Sports City Arena when they play the Bahrainis in their second game, which is scheduled for a 10pm tip-off.
The home team will be looking to make a positive start in front of their local fans and give themselves a chance to qualify for the Fiba Asia Cup 2025.
Bahrain will then play their other game tomorrow against Iraq at the same venue and also with a 10pm start.
