CRICKET – IN a one-sided encounter yesterday, Bahrain delivered a stellar performance to defeat Singapore by eight wickets in Match 25 of the ICC CWC Challenge League B.
Electing to field first, Bahrain’s bowlers dismantled Singapore’s batting lineup, restricting them to a paltry 117 runs. The chase was comfortably completed, thanks to a composed batting display led by Sohail Ahmed, who was named Player of the Match for his all-round contribution.
Singapore’s innings got off to a shaky start as Bahrain’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Imran Khan was the standout performer with the ball, claiming three wickets for just 12 runs in his eight overs, including the crucial dismissals of Suryansh Gulecha (34) and Janak Prakash (1). Sohail Ahmed complemented him brilliantly, finishing with figures of 4/17 in 4.4 overs, including the wickets of Hari Kukreja (25) and Manpreet Singh (11).
Singapore’s batting lineup struggled to build partnerships, with only Suryansh Gulecha showing some resistance with a brisk 34 off 40 balls. The middle order collapsed under the disciplined bowling of Bahrain, with Abdul Majid (1/22) and Rizwan Butt (0/24) also contributing to the team’s dominance. Singapore were eventually bowled out for 117 in 33.4 overs, setting a modest target for Bahrain.
Bahrain’s chase began confidently, with openers Rishabh Ramesh and Shahbaz Badar laying a solid foundation. Despite losing Ramesh early, Sohail Ahmed continued his fine form, scoring a quickfire 40 off 40 balls, including one boundary and four sixes. His aggressive yet controlled innings ensured Bahrain stayed ahead of the required run rate.
Fiaz Ahmed, 50* off 58 balls, supported and guided the team home with an unbeaten partnership with in-form Sohail sealing the victory in just 24.4 overs. Singapore’s bowlers tried to make inroads, but the target proved too small to defend.
Bahrain’s comprehensive victory was built on a disciplined bowling performance and a clinical chase. Sohail Ahmed’s all-round brilliance and Imran Khan’s economical spell were the highlights of the match. The win strengthens Bahrain’s position in the ICC CWC Challenge League B and underscores their growing prowess in the tournament.
Singapore, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their batting frailties ahead of their next fixture. The Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground witnessed another dominant display from Bahrain, who continue to impress with each new game and performances.
