A newly discovered deepwater fish has been named after an iconic animated character from Studio Ghibli, a renowned Japanese animation studio based in Koganei, Tokyo.
The fish, officially known as Branchiostegus Sanae, was named after San, the warrior princess from Studio Ghibli's animated film Princess Mononoke, because of its facial markings.
In the movie, the character of San has war paint on her face.
Inspired by San, researchers from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, the Chinese Academy of Science, Zhejiang University, and the Ocean University of China chose the name as a tribute.
The newly discovered fish is a deepwater tilefish usually found 600 metres below sea level.
