FOOTBALL – FORMER Bahrain Olympic team and senior men’s national team head coach Anthony Hudson, now in charge of Qatar’s Al Arabi, is pleased to be back in the kingdom – even if it is as an opponent.
“It’s amazing to be back,” Hudson told the GDN last night on the sidelines of his pre-game Press conference ahead of Arabi’s match against Bahrain’s Riffa this evening.
“I had a great time here – I loved my time, I love the country and working with the players,”
Hudson began his coaching career at the age of 27 in 2008 in the US. He was appointed head coach of the Bahraini under-23s in 2012, and during his tenure, he helped guide the Olympic team to the Gulf title before moving on to coach the senior men’s squad until mid-2014.
Hudson has since coached in New Zealand, back in the US, and in Qatar before joining Arabi in September.
Hudson said that despite having left Bahrain for a decade now, he has always been watching from afar. He also wishes for the national team to be successful in their ongoing bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
“I’ve always followed the national team,” Hudson said. “I felt I had a really good relationship with the players and so I always liked to follow their careers and see how they are doing.
“The team has had some good success in the past and I’m hopeful that they will do well in this World Cup qualification period.”
