Defending champions Bahrain Rugby Football Club (BRFC) will hope to continue their unbeaten run in the 2023-24 West Asia Premiership when they take on the Dubai Hurricanes tonight at The Sevens stadium in Dubai.
The BRFC, who are seeking a fourth consecutive title after completing a hat-trick of championship wins in the 2022-23 season, currently have 18 points from four straight wins but are second in the seven-team table behind the Dubai Tigers, who are also unbeaten after four games and also have 18 points but occupy the top slot because of goal difference.
The Hurricanes, meanwhile, languish at the bottom of the table with just two bonus points from five consecutive defeats.
But BRFC chairman Mike Cunningham warned that, irrespective of the Hurricanes’ current position in the standings, they would still be tough opponents as the BRFC prepare to play their first Premiership game since their 20-18 victory over the Dubai Exiles last November.
“We’re excited to get the West Asia Premiership underway again and we’re looking forward to a tough match against the Hurricanes,” Cunningham told the GDN.
“The boys have had a good long break since appearing in the Dubai Sevens in early December. They’ve had time to deal with the injuries and the knocks and the bruises and they’ve had a spell to relax over the Christmas period. Now, they’ve been back together training for the last week and they’re ready to go.
“So we’re looking forward to a good run to the end of the season. Of course, with the way the fixtures have been scheduled, we’ll have more home games than away games which is going to be great and the atmosphere is going to build towards the end of the season. Hopefully, we can bring a semi-final – or even the final – back to Bahrain as we’ve done in previous years.”
