Reigning champions Al Ahli sealed their second straight victory of the new Bahrain Basketball League season breezing past Bahrain Club 89-65 in a second week game at the Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam yesterday.
Ahli, who crushed Samaheej 94-51 in the opener, continued their superb start to the season with another dominant performance cruising ahead in all the quarters. They led 42-32 at half-time and returned with renewed vigour, giving their opponents no chance to stage a comeback.
Hesham Sarhan was the top scorer for the winners with 20 points, five rebounds and one assist. Anthony McClain and Maitham Jameel contributed 15 points each. Bahrain Club’s scoring was led by Ali Asghar with 19 points.
Later, Al Ettihad claimed their first victory of the season outlasting Sitra 93-80 in the second encounter of the night.
Ettihad, who went down 102-63 to Muharraq in the opener, got off to a spirited start that gave them a 22-point lead at half-time (58-36). The substantial lead stood them in good stead as Sitra were found wanting despite bouncing back after the interval.
Stephen Hurt led the winners with 32 points, 20 rebounds and six assists while Hassan Albossta chipped in with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists. Sitra’s top scorer was Husain Safar with 28 points, four rebounds and two assists. He was assisted by Trayvon Reed with 21 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.
Second week matches continue today when Isa Town take on Samaheej at 5.30pm. The match will be followed by Manama’s clash against Al Hala at 7.30pm.
