Donald Trump met with Syria's Ahmed Al Sharaa in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday (May 14), a day after announcing that the US would lift all sanctions on Syria.
He made the announcement during a summit between the United States and Gulf Arab countries, despite concerns within sectors of his administration over Syria's leaders' former ties to Al Qaeda.
Sharaa renounced ties to the group in 2016.
Trump also urged Sharaa to normalise ties with Israel, a White House spokesperson said.
