FOOTBALL – Bahrain's girls’ youth football national team missed out on the bronze medals yesterday in the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) U17 Girls’ Championship 2025, held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
The kingdom’s youngsters lost to their counterparts from Jordan 0-2 in the match for third place, played at Prince Saud Bin Jalawi Stadium. The nationals conceded the game’s first goal in the 20th minute when Mira Jarrar scored from inside the six-yard box off a cross from just outside the area, delivered by teammate Haya Abu Ali.
The Jordanians then doubled their advantage two minutes from half-time after Dana Abu Hazeem scored from close range on a one-on-one with Bahrain goalkeeper Maya Al Abbasi. Dana received a brilliant through-pass from Nadin Abu Salha, setting her up perfectly for her goal.
With the result, the Bahrainis wrapped up their participation in the tournament, which was organised by the WAFF and was held to support the various age groups in the regional game for girls.
Al Abbasi was later honoured as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper. She received a trophy for her distinction during last night’s post-final awarding ceremony, where Lebanon were crowned champions after beating Syria 4-0.
