A ‘cow fart’ vaccine could help tackle climate change, according to environmentalists.
Scientists at UK’s Pirbright Institute are working on a special vaccine for cows to reduce methane emissions (cow farts), which are a major contribution to greenhouse gases, as reported by CNN news network.
Additionally, a single cow produces an average of 200 pounds of methane per year, which accounts for a staggering third of human-related methane emissions.
John Hammond, Director of Research at The Pirbright Institute, stated, "The appeal of a vaccine is that it’s a very well-adopted, common practice… and people know about the benefits of vaccination for animal health generally."
The project intends to reduce emissions by at least 30% and has been backed by the Bezos Earth Fund with an astonishing $9.4 million!
As opposed to previous feed additives and selective breeding habits, the single-dose vaccine would be a first-of-its-kind long-term solution. The vaccine works by triggering antibodies to suppress methane-producing gut bacteria in the animals. Although its side effects and the effectiveness of the injection are still being examined.
