GOLF – Awali Golf Club triumphed in the annual Green Brown Challenge, played against The Royal Golf Club in a pairs matchplay format.
Twenty players from each club competed in a better ball pair matchplay on both surfaces. Ten matches were played in total – each good for a point, or half-a-point in case of a draw.
The scores after the first nine holes on the browns of Awali Golf Club were taken to the grass of The Royal Golf Club to be completed on the fast greens.
Awali Golf Club, the defending champions – having won the trophy for the first time in 2024 – needed only five points from the 10 on offer to retain the trophy. They had victory on their mind from the first tee shot and roared away to another success with an 8-2 result to capture the trophy for a second successive year.
This event between both clubs originated in 2011 from a discussion between the then-captain of The Royal Golf Club and the then-vice captain of Awali Golf Club about the difficulty of dealing with the different surfaces and for whom it would be easier to adjust.
The Royal Golf Club’s golf operations director and Bahrain Open winner in 2022, Sam Hobday, said: “Another fantastic day of golf on the sand and grass, bringing both clubs together to compete in this eagerly awaited challenge match.
“We look forward to trying to regain the trophy next year.”
Awali Golf Club captain Steve Newall commented: “The Green Brown Challenge is a great test of the different golfing environments within the Kingdom of Bahrain.
“I would like to congratulate my team on winning the trophy and hopefully we can continue our recent success and defend it in 2026.”
The prizes were handed out by Hobday with Newall and the Awali Golf Club team happily receiving the trophy.
