GOLF – SUPREME Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa received yesterday Bapco Energies group chief executive Mark Thomas and DP World Tour Middle East director Tom Phillips to discuss plans for next year’s Bahrain Championship, taking place as part of the 2025 DP World Tour.
The Bahrain Championship is the kingdom’s biggest and most prestigious golf tournament, and it will be taking place from January 30 to February 2 at the Royal Golf Club featuring many of the biggest names in the international game.
Also in attendance during the reception were GSA deputy chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, BOC vice-president Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, GSA CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar, and BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji.
Shaikh Khalid praised the close co-operation between the BOC, Bapco Energies, and the DP World Tour and stressed the importance of early preparations to host the Bahrain Championship in the best possible way.
The competition is set to be held for the second straight year following a successful previous edition held at the beginning of this year.
At the meeting, Shaikh Khalid witnessed the signing of a tripartite agreement between the BOC, Bapco Energies, and the DP World Tour.
The deal was signed by Al Kooheji, Thomas, and Phillips.
Al Kooheji stressed that the sponsorship of Bapco Energies for the major golf event will have a significant impact in achieving its desired success. Expressing his pride in the sponsorship, Al Kooheji said that it reflects Bapco Energies’ keenness to support the kingdom’s sports sector.
Thomas expressed his delight in sponsoring the Bahrain Championship for the second year in a row.
He said that Bapco Energies’ support comes from its belief in the importance of backing the youth and sports movement in Bahrain, and contributing to the hosting of various events, especially in light of the tremendous success of this year’s edition.
On his part, Phillips said that the agreement enhances the value of the Bahrain Championship and that it reflects the great interest in organising the tournament in the best possible way.
He expressed his great appreciation for the sponsorship, which will greatly contribute to the kingdom’s event on the 2025 DP World Tour.
Bahrain’s premier golf spectacle is set to be a part of the DP World Tour’s international swing.
The 2025 DP World Tour schedule features a minimum of 42 competitions in at least 26 different countries. It will see tour members compete for a record total prize fund of $153 million outside the major championships.
South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli won this year’s edition of the event, which was the second time a DP World Tour competition was held in Bahrain, marking its return to the kingdom after 13 years.
The first time Bahrain hosted a DP World Tour event was in 2011 with the Volvo Golf Champions.
