FOOTBALL – HIS Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa received yesterday Spanish La Liga president Javier Tebas.
SCYS first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa attended the meeting.
Shaikh Nasser commended Tebas’s efforts in elevating Spanish football, noting how La Liga has grown into one of the world’s biggest leagues with a global fan base, including many supporters from Bahrain.
Shaikh Nasser highlighted the importance of sharing expertise and building long-term partnerships to further enhance Bahrain’s sports sector.
Tebas expressed his appreciation for Shaikh Nasser’s leadership in advancing Bahraini sports, particularly football, and conveyed his hopes for continued success and growth in the kingdom’s sports initiatives.
Meanwhile, Tebas also met yesterday with Bahrain Football Association (BFA) president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and BFA vice-president Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, in the presence of BFA board member and media committee chairman Ayman Al Fardan and BFA secretary general Rashid Alzaabi.
The meeting discussed enhancing football development in Bahrain through cooperation with La Liga.
It also reviewed creating a professional league in Bahrain, leveraging Spanish expertise to train local coaches, and hosting matches featuring Spanish teams to position Bahrain as a hub for sports tourism.
The officials also discussed the potential for holding training camps and exchange programmes for Bahraini players and coaches at Spanish clubs, aimed at improving skills and fostering international exposure.
An agreement was signed to formalise cooperation between the BFA and La Liga, marking the start of joint efforts to implement these initiatives.
The BFA also explored partnerships with Cordoba CF, represented by CEO Antonio Fernandez, to share expertise across various football operations, further strengthening ties between Bahrain and Spain in the sport.
