TENNIS – Top seeds Masa Jankovic of Serbia and Marat Salbiev cruised into their respective second rounds yesterday in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tournament 2024, which is currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hardcourts in Isa Town.
Masa won her girls’ singles match against Chinese qualifier Xinru Zhong 6-0, 6-0 to book her ticket to the next stage. She will now take on Swedish wild card Victoria Lacki, who had already secured her place on Monday with a first-round victory.
On the distaff, Marat defeated Turkish qualifier Hakanarda Aydin 6-0, 6-2 to power through in the boys’s singles. He will next face off with wild card Axel Raber of Sweden, who beat Sattam Moafa of Saudi Arabia 6-1, 6-3 yesterday.
Others to make it through to the girls’ singles second round yesterday were third seed Gloria Pop of Romania, seventh seed Alina Sogomonyan of Armenia, and Caroline Hermanns of Denmark.
In the boys’ singles, also advancing were fourth seed Skander Nsairi of Tunisia, fifth seed Matija Putic of Serbia, sixth seed Cagan Efe Tufekci of Turkey, Iason Lykos of Greece, Maximilian Heidlmair of Austria, Mohammed Makki of Yemen, Tudor Alexandru Zecheru of Romania, and Ahmed Ibrahim of Egypt.
Tournament action continues today with matches in both the boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles draws.

The ongoing ITF competition is a J60 event – meaning that the singles winners take away 60 ranking points – and it is the third on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar to be held in the kingdom.
Two J30 championships also took place at the BTF last month, along with the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group V and the just-concluded Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group III.
