Al Ittihad Alexandria lifted the 2024 Egypt Super Cup last night.
Ittihad Alexandria claimed the coveted trophy after defeating their countrymen Al Ahly 87-84 in a thrilling, double-overtime contest, played at Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town.
The game was part of the four-match Bahrain Egypt Super Cup, which continues until tomorrow. It is being held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Ettihad trailed 21-27 after the first quarter but powered ahead 44-41 at the half. Ahly then roared back in the third to go ahead 65-68 heading into the final frame, but then Ittihad Alexandria managed to take a two-point cushion, 73-71, with 20 seconds to go. Omar Oraby scored on a tip-in, however, to send the game into the first extra session.
Neither team could build a gap in the period and they went into another overtime tied at 80-all. There, a free-throw by Ahmed Adel with 23 seconds to play gave Ittihad Alexandria the lead for good, and then two more charity shots from Will Cherry pegged the final score.
Cherry finished as the leading scorer for the victors with 25 points and was later named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Youssef Shousha added 17 in the win while Ahmed Abo Al Mulla scored 12.
For Ahly, John Roberson was their top man with 19 points, while Ehab Amin added 17.
The Bahrain Egypt Super Cup continues tonight with the two Bahraini teams in action. League champions Manama take on perennial title challengers Al Ahli at the same venue at 8pm.
The winners of that game will then face Ittihad Alexandria on Saturday in the main event for the Bahrain Egypt Super Cup. The losers will face Ahly in the bronze medal contest.
