TENNIS – THE Turkish tandem of Emirhan Bulut and Yagiz Yildiz were yesterday crowned boys’ doubles champions of the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tennis Tournament 2024, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
The competition is a J30 event, and it is the first of three successive International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors championships taking place in the kingdom over the next few weeks.
The third-seeded pairing of Emirhan and Yagiz secured their title after beating fourth seeds Tejas Ahuja and Kabir Chothani of India 6-3, 6-4 in their final.
Meanwhile, third-seeded Bulgarian Stanislav Kosev set up an exciting clash for the boys’ singles crown against Erkut Aydin of Turkey.
Kosev battled past Undrakh Purevdorj of Mongolia 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, while Erkut also needed three sets to take down fourth seed Daksh Kukreti of India 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
On the distaff, Fangyu Shang and Xiang Liu, both of China, set up a showdown for the girls’ singles title. Fangyu upset Turkish top seed Bahar Kilic 6-0, 6-1 to make it through, while eighth seed Elizaveta Astafjeva of Estonia 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
Both singles finals are scheduled for today at the BTF. All are welcome to attend. The prize-giving ceremony will be held right after play.
This J30 event will be followed by another of the same level starting from Monday and continuing until November 16. The third is a J60 event, scheduled for December 2 to 8.
Each tournament’s name – J30 and J60 – reflects the number of ranking points awarded to the singles winner of that particular event.
