TENNIS – BAHRAIN’S Faris Altoobli advanced to the boys’ singles second round yesterday in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tennis Tournament 2024, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
The tournament is a J30 event, and it is the first of three successive International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors competitions taking place in the kingdom over the next few weeks.
Faris marched through after defeating Yassin Mohamed Hussein of Egypt 6-0, 7-5 yesterday in their opening stage encounter.
The Bahraini wild card now moves on to face fourth seed Daksh Kukreti of India, who outplayed Ahmad Mushahid of the US 6-3, 6-0 in their match yesterday.
Also in the first round, second seed Shixun Zhu of China defeated Thomas Workman of the US 6-3, 6-0, and third seed Stanislav Kosev of Bulgaria beat Ruprecht Hellauer of Austria 6-3, 6-3.
Others to qualify for round two were Hakanarda Aydin of Turkey and Laith Alhassan of Syria.
In the girls’ singles, Marilyn Workman of the US battled back from a set down to overcome Bahrain’s Hajar Zaidan 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Agata Konarska also needed three sets to defeat Thaniya Sarai Gogulamanda of India 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2). Aisha Al Busaidi was the other girls’ singles winner for the day, beating Natalia Guanipa Gonzalez of Venezuela 6-0, 6-0.
