TENNIS – Agata Ulikhina advanced to the girls’ singles second round in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tennis Tournament 2024, which got underway yesterday at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
The tournament is a J30 event, and it is the first of three successive International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors competitions set to take place in the kingdom over the next few weeks.
Agata secured her place in round two after defeating Cara Du Toit of Namibia 6-0, 6-3 in her opening match yesterday.
Agata now moves on to face top seed Bahar Kilic of Turkey, who had a bye in the first stage.
Other girls to march through yesterday were Eva Ioana Cercel of Romania and Pradatta Das of India. Eva was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Haneen Alnajjar of Bahrain, whereas Pradatta defeated Lidia Ratobylskaya 6-4, 6-2 in their contest.
In the boys’ singles, Undrakh Purevdorj of Mongolia defeated Abhik Khatry of Australia 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Matei Sucu of Romania was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Nelson Guo of the US, and will next face fifth seed Showrya Samala of India, who beat Arshiya Rasoulinia of Iran 6-2, 6-4.
Indians Tejas Ahuja and Aarav Dhekial were also triumphant. Tejas beat Kaya Cankardes of Turkey 6-3, 6-4, and Aarav overcame a tough challenge from Napradh Lalai of Thailand 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Aarav will play seventh seed Mohammad Alawadhi of Kuwait in the second round, Alawadhi was a 6-2, 6-4 victor against Yagiz Yildiz of Turkey.
Also through with wins yesterday were sixth seed Ziya Ayberk Aydin of Turkey, eighth seed Kabir Chothani of India, Leonidas Chaidemenos of Greece, and Erkut Aydin, also of Turkey.
Play continues today at the same venue from 9.30am. Aside from singles matches, action will also be held in doubles from today.
