RUGBY – BAHRAIN booked their tickets yesterday to the knockouts of the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The kingdom’s representatives advanced from the preliminary round of the men’s tournament after splitting their two games at Dashrath Stadium in the Nepali capital.
They first outclassed the hosts 27-7 but then suffered a narrow 5-10 defeat to Uzbekistan.
The results put them in second place on the Group B table with seven points. The Uzbeks went top with an unbeaten record and nine points, while Nepal had five points in third place.
All three squads had automatic victories on the table being in a three-team group.
Bahrain are next set to face off with Group A winners the Philippines in the quarter-finals. The other fixtures in this stage see Uzbekistan take on Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka face off with India, and Chinese Taipei go up against Jordan.
Should the nationals advance, they will next take on the winners of the Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan clash in the semis, which will also be held today.
The gold medal game will be the culmination of tournament action this evening.
Bahrain’s delegation in Nepal includes Bahrain Rugby Federation director of rugby Rory Drummond, sevens coach Ross Preedy, and head of medical Dr Amy Bowzaylo.
The squad features captain Deina Morete, vice-captain Adam Wallace, Aled Morris, Alastair Crombie, Lindsey Gibson, Fiachra Wynne, Talal Al Sharif, David Evans, Greg Heath, Jack Phillips, Matthew Richards, and Cole Crawford.
