Shaikh Khalid was at the 81,000 plus-capacity Stade de France and watched as Yavi made history by winning the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase final while setting a new Olympic record in the process.
Also in attendance were GSA deputy chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, BOC vice-president Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Shaikh Khalid’s sons Shaikh Faisal bin Khalid Al Khalifa and Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa, GSA CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar, BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji, and a number of Team Bahrain officials and administrative members.
Shaikh Khalid congratulated His Majesty’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and SCYS chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa on Yavi’s gold medal.
“Our efforts have been crowned with our first Olympic medal in Paris,” Shaikh Khalid said. “Yavi gave an exceptional performance that raises the name of Bahrain and expresses the fighting spirit and strong will that it possesses.
“This would not have been possible without the great support of the wise leadership and the continuous efforts of all members of the Bahraini mission. We are proud of this achievement, which is the beginning of more successes in the future.”
Shaikh Khalid added: “We are committed to investing in our sports and continuing to support our athletes at the highest levels.
“What Yavi has achieved is the fruit of this support and the attention that the leadership gives to sports and athletes. I extend my thanks and appreciation to all those who contributed to this success, and I affirm that this achievement is evidence of the ability of our athletes.”
