Researchers working with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ocean Exploration recently discovered a strange ‘golden orb’ on the Alaskan seafloor, and they still don’t know what it is.
The team of researchers was using a remotely operated vehicle that was two miles below the ocean surface to explore the Kodiak–Bowie Seamount chain of extinct volcanoes when they first came across the ‘orb’.
The object appeared to have a golden colour and was stuck on top of a rock on the seafloor.
Usually, scientists are able to identify organisms and objects almost immediately after spotting them, but in this case, they were left perplexed.
The pictures of their discovery have now gone viral, having already been viewed more than 79,000 times on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The scientists guessed that it could be an egg case or a sponge, but they would need to conduct DNA testing to be sure of its origins.
