Angry fans have edited the Wikipedia page of Brazilian World Cup referee Wilton Sampaio, after he drew the ire of English supporters for his controversial decisions at the England vs France quarter-final match on Saturday.
The Brazilian referee waved away a possible penalty following a lengthy VAR review after English captain Harry Kane was thought to have been brought down in the penalty area by a French defender.
Fans felt robbed of a possible win opportunity and took to Wikipedia to express their anger, editing the referee’s page to read “Wilton Pereira Sampaio is a French fan and Brazilian football referee. He was recently offered a lap dance by Mbappe for favourable decisions to France”.
Another edit to the page read “He is currently under investigation for falsely not awarding a penalty to England after Harry Kane was assaulted.”
Moderators of the online encyclopaedia quickly took down the edits, but they have since made the rounds on social media with many describing the stunt as ‘hilarious’.
