Researchers exploring the deep sea floor around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands found a seafloor teeming with life, some of which have never been seen before.
Australian national science agency The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) captured these animals as part of a research mission.
A research vessel, the Investigator, set off in September 2022 to explore the ocean floor around the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean.
Since these islands are more than 600 miles from the nearest landmass, very little is known about the marine life around them.
"There's still parts of the world that are completely unknown," Tim O'Hara, chief scientist on the expedition and Senior Curator of Marine Invertebrates at Museums Victoria, said.
