Riyadh: Consumers in Saudi Arabia dump food waste worth SR49 billion every year, i.e., an average daily of SR134 million.
According to economic expert Dr. Rashid Al-Fawzan, the food that ends up in the garbage bins could construct 1000 schools for SR10 billion, 50 hospitals for SR15 billion, 10 stadiums for SR10 billion, and 1500 health centres for SR13.5 billion.
Dr. Al-Fawazan unveiled the alarming figures during a workshop theme ‘Reducing Food Waste’, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, reported Arabic daily Sabq.
In a paper he presented, he said that the food waste in Saudi Arabia is estimated at SR 5.5 million every hour.
