The Mumbai traffic police received a threat message via their WhatsApp number on Friday, which claimed that 34 individuals, described as "human bombs," each carrying approximately 400kg of RDX, had been positioned in 34 distinct vehicles.
The sender, reportedly identifying himself as part of the 'Lashkar-e-Jihadi' organisation, asserted that these devices were intended to detonate in a co-ordinated manner, causing a blast powerful enough to "shake the entire city."
The message allegedly added that 14 terrorists had 'successfully infiltrated India'.
Mumbai Police officials said the force is on high alert and has implemented enhanced security measures throughout the state, with all facets of the threat undergoing thorough investigation.
The alert comes at a critical juncture as the Mumbai police are actively engaged in preparations for the upcoming Anant Chaturdashi and Eid-e-Milad festivals, which are significant events for the city.
An officer said the police helpline regularly receives such threatening messages from unidentified numbers. He elaborated that these communications are often attributed to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties or those who are under the influence of alcohol.
Nevertheless, the established protocol dictates that every received threat message must be treated with utmost seriousness. The procedure mandates that if a specific location is identified within the threat, authorities are required to initiate an evacuation of the premises and conduct a comprehensive search with the assistance of the bomb disposal squad to ensure public safety.
