The Ministry of Sustainable Development held a workshop with government entities in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in collaboration with Bain & Company and the World Economic Forum (WEF), to explore Artificial intelligence (AI) applications for sustainability in the public sector.
The workshop is part of a broader initiative under Bain & Company and WEF’s Leaders of Sustainable MENA (LSM) Community to identify high-impact AI use cases that advance sustainability across industries. Under this theme, the workshop is the first step towards developing an AI prototype to accelerate sustainability efforts across industries in Bahrain. The outcomes of this collaboration will be captured in a research-driven report, planned for release in early 2026 and showcased through international platforms and events.
During the workshop, experts from Bain & Company presented an overview of AI applications in the public sector, showcasing successful case studies from the MENA region that demonstrated positive impact while outlining the key requirements for developing effective smart solutions. The experts also emphasised that AI is emerging as a powerful catalyst for addressing the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges. They underscored the importance of governments staying informed about global AI advancements and reiterated the need to strengthen national capabilities. They also highlighted this as a vital step to future-proof upcoming generations by equipping them with the dynamic skills and adaptability needed in an evolving digital landscape.
Attended by 30 senior representatives from over 15 government entities, the workshop featured collaborative sessions that addressed real-world challenges, with a focus on leveraging AI for sustainable development, accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and evaluating scalable AI-enabled solutions. Expert-led discussions further explored practical opportunities for AI applications in the field of sustainable development in Bahrain, exploring strategies for developing AI prototypes that align with national plans and priorities.
Participants commended the government’s commitment to integrating AI into public services in a systematic and unified manner, ensuring the alignment of related initiatives and investments to maximise performance, streamline services, and deliver tangible benefits to citizens and residents, while positioning the Kingdom as a regional hub for innovation in sustainability.
The workshop underscored the Ministry’s commitment to fostering innovation and leveraging the power of AI to drive meaningful progress towards sustainable development, building on its ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships with international organisations and leading global institutions.
