Basketball – THE International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Mid-Term Congress, hosted by Bahrain with broad international participation from national federation representatives, senior officials and prominent sports figures, successfully concluded yesterday with the Fiba Foundation board of directors meeting.
Bahrain Olympic Committee vice-president and Fiba Foundation board of directors member Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa attended the meeting. The session was chaired by board chairman Hamane Niang, along with vice-chairman Manuel Pangilinan and Fiba secretary general Andreas Zagklis.
The Mid-Term Congress addressed a number of future projects and initiatives and reviewed key achievements over the past year, particularly in the foundation’s community and development programmes.
Board members commended Bahrain’s growing role in supporting the foundation’s mission and the high level of organisation witnessed at this year’s Fiba Mid-Term Congress.
They also highlighted the active contributions of Shaikh Isa in advancing the foundation’s programmes, particularly in supporting youth and community initiatives across the Middle East.
The hosting of the Fiba Foundation board meeting in Bahrain reflects international recognition of the kingdom’s capabilities as a regional hub for major events and its vital contribution to empowering sport to fulfil its cultural, humanitarian and developmental roles.
The Fiba Foundation serves as the social and cultural arm of the Fiba. Established in 2008, it is tasked with preserving the cultural heritage of basketball while implementing development and humanitarian programmes that leverage the sport as a vehicle for positive social change.
The foundation oversees the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland, which houses Fiba’s official headquarters, a cultural centre, and a permanent exhibition chronicling the history of the game.
The foundation’s work is grounded in two main pillars – Basketball For Good and Basketball Heritage.
Its projects span over 150 countries worldwide, reaching more than 95,000 beneficiaries annually through initiatives focused on education, health, gender equality, youth empowerment and social inclusion, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
