Ukraine and the US could sign a memorandum of intent next Thursday on the minerals deal currently being negotiated by the two countries, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
President Donald Trump has pushed for a deal that would allow the United States to share in profits of Ukraine’s natural resources and critical minerals in what he casts as repayment for military aid provided by Washington to Ukraine under the previous presidency of Joe Biden.
Zelenskiy claimed that Ukraine has intelligence which shows China is supplying artillery and gunpowder to Russia.
“We believe that Chinese representatives are engaged in the production of some weapons on the territory of Russia,” he said separately at a Press conference in Kyiv.
He did not specify whether he meant artillery systems or shells.
Giving insight into the conflict, Ukraine’s military said that Russian forces are trying out a new tactic of larger-scale assaults involving several hundred troops, as Kyiv girds for a new offensive push from its bigger adversary more than three years into a full-scale war.
The change signals a possible break with the tactics which Russia has leant on for over two years, sending in tiny groups of infantry to seep slowly through Ukrainian lines.
A post from the Ukrainian military’s southern command yesterday showed video footage of what it said was a Russian attack involving 320 men and 40 armoured vehicles in the vicinity of several villages on the southern frontline in Zaporizhzhia region.
The post said that the attack took place on Wednesday evening and lasted approximately two and a half hours before it was beaten back, adding that heavy losses were inflicted on the Russians.
Reuters could not verify the battlefield claims.
