FOOTBALL – AL Najma secured a last-gasp 1-1 draw against East Riffa last night to wrap up the 14th round of action in the 2024-25 Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League.
Serbian Lazar Dordevic scored in the sixth minute of second-half injury time to help give Najma a share of the points in the hotly contested affair. Husain Al Khayyat had earlier converted a 57th minute penalty to give East Riffa the slim advantage.
The result helped Najma improve to 18 points in mid-table following their third standoff of the season. They denied East Riffa their second triumph as they registered their fifth stalemate to go to eight points.
East Riffa went ahead last night at Shaikh Ali bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Stadium in Arad after Mauritanian professional Ahmed Kory Denne was brought down in the box by Najma goalkeeper Ahmed Abdulrasool Abdulla with a hard tackle.
Al Khayyat stepped forward to take the spot kick, which he sent to the right of goal.
Dordevic then supplied the late heroics for Najma after heading in from close range. Abdulla delivered a long pass from near-midfield towards the box that went uncleared, and Dordevic pounced on the opportunity by heading in the loose ball. Najma remained in seventh place on the 12-team standings while East Riffa stayed bottom.
