CYCLING – AAMIR Hussain Fahim from Iran emerged as the overall winner yesterday in the fifth Abdul Hakim Al Shammari Group Holding Cycling Race, held in Zallaq.
The race took place under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Fahim narrowly took first place in the open category following a heated duel with the UAE pairing of Ebrahim Alsuwaidi and Nasser Almemari.
Fahim, competing with AlAdaam team, completed the event distance in one hour 24 minutes 28.27 seconds, beating Alsuwaidi at the finish by a mere 0.25 seconds. Almemari was not far behind the leading pair after finishing third just 1.46s from the victor.
Meanwhile, Victorious cyclist Mohammed Alqais clinched first place in the Bahraini amateurs category.
Alqais was also engaged in a tight battle for the victory with countryman Mohammed Ali racing him wheel-to-wheel until the finish. Only 0.23s separated the pair, with Alqais finishing in a time of 1:26:14.19. Hasan Thamer came third for ASGH team 21.34s behind Alqais.
On the distaff, Elisa Grassi was triumphant in the women’s category. She completed her race in a time of 1:00:12.04, while Mashael Alhazmi was a close second, only 0.03s behind. Erika Martinez completed their podium after finishing 4:32.29 from Grassi.
In the teams’ category, UAE MOD were the winners, while AlAdaam were the runners-up. Victorious finished in third place.
Following all the action, GSA CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar and BCA president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad bin Ahmed Al Khalifa presented the winners their respective trophies and medals, in the presence of Abdul Hakim Al Shammari Group Holding owner Abdul Hakim Al Shammari and other officials.
The hugely popular event attracted close to 200 riders. It was organised by Abdul Hakim Al Shammari Group Holding in co-operation with the BCA.
