CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious had a sub-par ending to the fifth AlUla Tour yesterday in Saudi Arabia.
Leading rider Rainer Kepplinger from Austria missed out on a place on the general classification (GC) podium after suffering a puncture during the 169.6-kilometre fifth and final stage.
Kepplinger, who started the day second in the GC, finished the leg in 43rd place, which dropped him three positions to fifth overall.
Bahrain Victorious’ best rider in yesterday’s stage classification was Alberto Bruttomesso from Italy, who had a top 10 finish in eighth. He was part of the leaders’ group in a sprint finish, which was won by Matteo Moschetti of Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team.
Amongst other Bahrain Victorious cyclists yesterday, Dutchman Max van der Meulen was 45th and Italian Nicolo Buratti 46th, his countryman Andrea Pasqualon 52nd, Briton Oliver Stockwell 81st, and Slovenian Zak Erzen 87th.
In the race’s other rankings, Kepplinger finished sixth in the points classification for the green jersey, van der Meulen and Buratti were both in the top 10 of the best young rider classification for the white jersey in sixth and ninth, respectively, and Bahrain Victorious finished as the runners-up in the teams’ final ranking.
