CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Matevz Govekar claimed an impressive top 10 finish yesterday in the second Gran Premio Castellon-Ruta de la Ceramica in Spain.
The one-day road race is part of the UCI Europe Tour’s 2025 calendar.
The Slovenian finished sixth overall after 171.7 kilometres of action. He was part of the leaders’ group at the finish, which saw Antonio Morgado of UAE Team Emirates-XRG take first place in three hours 59 minutes and 14 seconds.
Govekar was the best finisher amongst the Bahrain Victorious squad, which also featured Govekar’s countryman Matej Mohoric, Kamil Gradek of Poland, Finlay Pickering and Fred Wright of Great Britain, Torstein Traen of Norway, and Vlad Van Mechelen of Belgium.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Victorious’ Afonso Eulalio climbed two places on the general classification (GC) to crack into the top 15 of the 25th Tour Down Under in Australia yesterday.
The Portuguese cyclist ranked 17th overall in the fifth and penultimate stage of the race, which covered 145.7 kilometres.
He was 45 seconds behind winner Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates, who took first place in 3:17:02.
Eulalio was Bahrain Victorious’ best finisher yesterday. Dutch teammate Mathijs Paasschens followed in 49th, Russian Roman Ermakov came 74th, German Nikias Arndt was 75th, Australian Robert Stannard came 77th, Italian Daniel Skerl finished 112th, and German Phil Bauhaus was classified 114th.
Eulalio was also the team’s best-ranked rider on the GC in 15th, with a time of more than a minute from yellow jersey-holder Narvaez.
In other general rankings, Bauhaus stayed in fifth place in the points standings for the green jersey, and Erkamov remained 12th in the best young rider standings for the white jersey.
Today’s action will be the sixth and final stage, set to cover 90km, starting and ending in Adelaide.
In another race yesterday, the ninth Tour of Sharjah in the UAE, featuring Bahrain national team members, Bahrain Victorious talent Ahmed Naser finished 25th yesterday on the 127km second leg.
Husain Mohamed followed in 98th, Sayed Ahmed Alawi was 120th, Mahdi Kadhem came 134th, and Jasim Husain and Ahmed Madan were 143rd and 144th, respectively.
Today’s third stage is an 11.16km individual time trial, set to take place in Sharjah University City.
