Bahrain's national cycling team are taking part in the ninth edition of the Tour of Sharjah, which got underway yesterday in the UAE.
The five-stage event features 525.55 kilometres in total with climbs reaching more than 5,700 metres.
Close to 200 riders representing various professional and club teams are taking part, as well as national teams.
The Bahraini contingent is composed of six riders in all, led by Team Bahrain Victorious professionals Ahmed Madan and Ahmed Naser. The others include Mahdi Kadhem, Husain Mohamed, Sayed Ahmed Alawi, and Jasim Husain.
Other national teams taking part are Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Mauritius, Rwanda, Morocco, Iraq, Oman and hosts UAE.
Yesterday’s first stage covered 133.2km. Mohamed was 53rd was the national team’s best-ranked competitor, while Naser was not farbehind in 56th. Alawi came 85th, Madan was 109th, Kadhem came 153rd, and Husain finished 164th.
Stage two is set for today over 127km, while stage three tomorrow is a time trial covering 11.16km. Stage four will be held over 132.32km, while stage five is across 121.87km.
