Zeal lifted the Bahrain Jewellery Centre Cup yesterday in the richest race of the 14th meeting of the 2024-25 national horseracing season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Isa Bin Salman Education Charitable Trust board of trustees chairman, Labour Fund (Tamkeen) chairman, and REHC High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was in attendance, along with REHC High Committee vice-chairman and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport vice-president Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al Khalifa, General Sports Authority deputy chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, and Supreme Council for Women member and Bahrain Olympic Committee member Dr Shaikha Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa.
Competing for owner Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim and trainer Haider Ebrahim, jockey Ebrahim Nader rode Zeal to the win in the 1,400m event to take the lion’s share of the BD4,000 prize.
The triumphant four-year-old gelding finished ahead of runner-up Social Distancing, representing Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Lee Newman.
Echo Through Time was third, also for the Adiyat-Smith tandem, with Seamie Heffernan in the saddle; while Black Shadow came fourth to take the last portion of the winnings for M and E Racing, Smith, and Marcialis Jaures.
There were three other Bahrain Jewellery Centre cups on yesterday’s eight-race card.
In race four, held over 1,600m with a BD3,000 prize, Juantorena won the Bahrain Jewellery Centre Mile Cup for Victorious, Fawzi Nass, and Husain Makki. Salamanca Lad came second for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Rosie Jessop, while Chimgan was third for Al Mohamediya Racing, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar. Notions took fourth place competing for Victorious and Nass, with Stephane Ladjadj as the jockey.
In race eight, What A Business lifted the Bahrain Jewellery Centre Sprint Cup after 1,000m. Lee Newman steered the eight-year-old gelding to the win for owner Jawad Abdulwahid Ahmed and trainer Jaffar Radhi for the biggest share of the BD3,000 prize. Redemption Time finished second for the Adiyat-Smith-Heffernan connections, while Qaseem came third for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Anas Al Siyabi, with Edward Cornelius in fourth for Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and PJ McDonald.
In the sixth race of the day for the Annoushka Jewellery Cup, held over 2,200m with a BD3,000 prize, Glen Savage took first place for M and E, Smith, and Newman. King Of The Throne was second for Al Afoo, Ramadhan, and Heffernan. Battyeford Boy took third place for Abdulla Al Gaoud, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Abdulrahim Jasim, while completing the top four was Count Rostov for Yousif Ahmed Alboainain, Yousif Alboainain, and Salem Alajmi.
Also yesterday, Memory Card won The Empire Limo Cup in race five, held over 2,400m with a BD2,000 prize. The four-year-old colt competed for the M and E-Smith-Jaures triumvirate.
Pegasus then triumphed in race seven to capture The Empire Limo Handicap Cup for L and Z Racing, Sayed Jaafar Isa, and Ebrahim Nader, after 2,000m with a BD2,000 prize.
In the second race of the day, covering a 1,200m distance with a BD2,000 prize, Nine Below Zero won The Supreme Council For Women Cup for Al Afoo, Ramadhan and Heffernan.
