CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Robert Stannard from Australia claimed a place in the top 10 yesterday in the Villawood Men’s Classic – a curtain-raising, single-day event ahead of the 2025 Tour Down Under, which kicks off the new season of the UCI WorldTour on Tuesday.
Stannard finished the event among the leading group, led by winner Sam Welsford of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team.
The Australian rider was ranked eighth overall and was classified with the same time of one hour four minutes and seven seconds.
Stannard was one of six Bahrain Victorious participants in the race, which covered 55.2 kilometres.
He was joined by his teammates who included Germans Phil Bauhaus and Nikias Arndt, Russian Roman Ermakov, Dutchman Mathijs Paasschens, and Italian Daniel Skerl.
Ermakov was classified 48th, Skerl followed in 70th, Bauhaus was 72nd, Arndt 77th, and Paasschens 109th.
Close to 140 cyclists competed in the ride, which has now set the stage for this year’s Tour Down Under – the first of 36 events on the 2025 UCI WorldTour, under the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
The race will cover a total distance of 819.9 kilometres and will be spread out across six legs from this Tuesday to Sunday next week.
