Bahrain's Royal Guard team clinched the title in the fourth edition of the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Commander-in-Chief Cup in football.
The Royal Guard secured the crown after defeating the Royal Bahraini Naval Force team 7-1 in the final, played at Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.
Othman Al Haj spearheaded the victors in the game, scoring a sensational four goals – all in the first half. Substitute Hamad Fouad then added their fifth, and Bahraini international Hazza Ali, who was part of the title-winning senior men’s national team in the 26th Gulf Cup in Kuwait over the weekend, added their sixth. Hassan Mohammed completed the rout with the Royal Guard’s seventh goal on a penalty.
For the Royal Bahraini Naval Force side, Abdulrahman Saeed scored their lone goal after Ali’s strike and right before the final concluding effort of Mohammed.
The result earned the Royal Guard the winners’ trophy for the fourth time in a row in the event, held in honour of BDF commander-in-chief Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.
Bahrain Football Association (BFA) president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa was on hand for the final along with a number of senior BDF officers.
Shaikh Ali later presented the winners their trophy and medals and conveyed the greetings of Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa to the Royal Guard team, congratulating them on winning the title.
Shaikh Ali also thanked Bahrain’s Military Sports Union for their distinguished efforts in organising the tournament.
Along with the champions’ trophy, a pair of Royal Guard players also took home top individual awards. Al Haj came away with the competition’s Best Scorer accolade while Royal Guard teammate Ashraf Waheed Ahmed secured the Best Goalkeeper honour.
