FOOTBALL – Inter Milan secured a 2-0 victory over lowly Como thanks to second-half goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram last night to remain within touching distance of the Serie A summit.
The win lifted third-placed defending champions Inter to 37 points from 16 games. They are three points off leaders Atalanta and one behind second-placed Napoli, who have both played 17.
After dominating the first half, Inter finally took the lead with Augusto’s towering header at the far post from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner three minutes after the break.
Thuram sealed the win two minutes into stoppage time with a powerful shot past Pepe Reina to reach 12 league goals, level with Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui in the Serie A scoring chart.
Earlier yesterday, Fiorentina missed a chance to go fourth in Serie A when they conceded two second half goals and lost at home to Udinese 2-1.
The Florence club won a record eight consecutive Serie A games before losing to Bologna 1-0 on December 15, and they looked to be back on track when Moises Kean converted a penalty after eight minutes to become the first Fiorentina player to reach double figures in the league since Federico Chiesa in the 2019-20 season.
However, Udinese were a different prospect after the break.
Lorenzo Lucca equalised with the aid of sloppy defending four minutes into the second half and then Florian Thauvin found space on the edge of the box to curl in the second eight minutes later.
The result left Udinese in ninth place and Fiorentina in fifth.
The match was a special one for Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina player whose collapse with a heart issue led to the suspension of its game with Inter Milan on December 1.
