MIXED MARTIAL ARTS – BAHRAIN bagged five medals yesterday, including one gold, on the first day of action in the 2024 International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Asian Youth Championships, currently being held in the kingdom as part of Brave International Combat Week.
All five medals were claimed in the youth men’s A categories, where Team Bahrain’s fighters also came away with one silver medal and three bronze medals.
Abdulla Qahtan captured the lone world title competing in the bantamweight 61.2kg category. He claimed his gold after topping the standings with four points from four wins in his fights.
Kirill Chervonyuk of Kazakhstan was the silver-medallist after finishing with three points, while sharing the bronze were Iqbol Pirov of Tajikistan and Haif Alqahtani of Saudi Arabia.
Saood Salman came away with a silver medal while Hamad Mohseni, Omar Khonji, and Saood Khamis won Bahrain’s three bronze medals.
Saood Salman took his silver in the strawweight 52.2kg class. He lost to Farhodi Davlatali of Tajikistan in their final. Hamad also stepped onto the podium in the same division, sharing the bronze with Timur Ibrayev of Kazakhstan.
Omar claimed his bronze medal in the featherweight 65.8kg class, where Emil Mirzoev of Kazakhstan captured gold. Hamzah Javed of the UK was the silver-medallist, and Zhalgas Baglan, also of Kazakhstan, shared bronze with Omar.
Saood Khamis took bronze in the lightweight 70.3kg class for Bahrain. He shared third place with India’s Mohammed Abdul Gaffar, while Kazakhstan’s Muslim Solsanov and Parviz Agaev were gold and silver-medallists, respectively.
Action continues today on the final day of competition.
The Asian youth championships are sanctioned by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF). It features the continent’s rising stars in MMA, aged 12 to 17 years old, both boys and girls, competing in various age groups and weight classes.
