Innovative initiatives are the cornerstones of progress and sustainable development. They are not just new ideas but practical tools that contribute to facing challenges and exploiting opportunities in creative ways.
Among the initiatives that have received global acclaim are those that combine technology and innovation to solve everyday problems and improve the quality of life.
The Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Bahrain have launched a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of nature and trees and to enhance green spaces throughout the kingdom.
This campaign, Buthoor Al Bahrain (Bahrain Seeds), was launched on the occasion of Urban October, a global celebration that encourages everyone to work towards a better urban future by raising awareness and exchanging cultures.
There is no doubt that this appreciated initiative reflects the effective partnership between the UN and Bahrain. This co-operation will contribute to enhancing the path of sustainable development and is in line with the kingdom’s commitments and environmental goals, including increasing the green area and doubling the number of trees to reach 3.6 million by 2035.
To be honest, I was very impressed by the idea of allocating a mobile truck to distribute saplings and spread awareness and directly involve citizens and residents in the streets and neighbourhoods, believing that every individual plays a pivotal role in the success of this initiative and instilling the spirit of a culture of environmental conservation and sustainability.
There is no doubt that the government and private sectors have played a major role in supporting all projects that promote vegetation cover in the kingdom, which serves the goals of the National Afforestation Plan. I hope that the ‘Bahrain Seeds’ campaign will be an additional platform to raise awareness of the importance of afforestation in achieving the goals of sustainable development.
Personally, I hope that the campaign continues throughout the year and that additional trucks will be deployed to reach all the locations in the kingdom. I also find it necessary that the Education Ministry organises field visits to public and private schools and distributes the largest number of seedlings, while providing students with the necessary information about the campaign as this age group is more responsive in accepting and planting this culture and transferring it to their homes and involving their parents.
These good efforts require a comprehensive and integrated action plan to achieve the desired goals, and no success can be achieved if it is not sustainable.
In conclusion, creativity and innovation are the keys to progress in today’s world. Every innovative initiative, no matter how simple, has the potential to make a major positive change in people’s lives. Therefore, societies should encourage governments and institutions to adopt such initiatives, with a focus on sustainability and inclusiveness to ensure a better future for all.
