HORSERACING – ZAGATO lifted the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (Asry) Cup last night in the feature event of a nine-race card at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Competing for owners Al Mohamediya Racing, jockey PJ McDonald rode the Fawzi Nass-trained six-year-old to first place after 2,200m to claim the lion’s share of the BD5,000 total prize amongst imported contenders.
Young Ireland finished in second place for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and David Liska, while Rayounpour finished third for Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Seamie Heffernan. Purgatory came fourth to claim the final share of the spoils for Naser Ali Naser Almoamen, Ali Nasser, and Stephane Ladjadj.
The Asry Cup was the ninth and final race and it took place under lights.
Five other cups were up for the taking, including four Arabian Horse Equestrian Services Cups and an REHC Cup.
In the sixth race for the Arabian Horse Equestrian Services Cup, sponsored by Red Mills, carrying a BD5,000 prize purse, Ava Go Joe triumphed across a 1,200m straight for owners AMS Racing and trainer Ali Jan, while ridden by jockey Ebrahim Nader. Chandigah came a close second for Al Sharq Racing, Mahmood Jawad, and Abdulla Faisal; while Army Ethos was third for Victorious and Fawzi Nass, trained by Nass, and ridden by Ladjadj. Ibn Arabi took fourth place for Al Nasser Syndicate, Ali Nasser, and Ahmed Maki.
In the other races, The Minder won the Arabian Horse Equestrian Services Cup, sponsored by Foran-Car and Day and Martin, in race eight for owners Victorious, trainer AM Smith, and jockey Hasan Asghar. Port Douglas lifted the Arabian Horse Equestrian Services Cup, sponsored by Baileys, in race three for Ali Jaafar Darwish, Jaffar Darwish, and Ebrahim Nader. Obeyan 1867 clinched the Arabian Horse Equestrian Services Cup, sponsored by TRM-Equine Product UK, in race one for Al Wasmiya, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Ebrahim Nader.
Meanwhile, Al Nuwayef won the REHC Cup in the fifth race of the day for Victorious, Nass, and Ladjadj.
