GOLF – THE stage is set for the sixth edition of the Bahrain Amateur Open golf championship, with a maximum field of 104 players expected to hit the fairways at the Royal Golf Club.
The 54-hole individual strokeplay competition gets underway on Thursday, and golfers from the UK, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Bahrain are in the field.
The tournament, being organised and run by the Bahrain Golf Association (BGA), is a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) counting event. The winner will not only come away with the champion’s trophy, but also earn a qualification card for next year’s Bahrain Championship on the 2025 DP World Tour.
Furthermore, the Bahrain Amateur Open is a qualifier for the 16th King Hamad Trophy (KHT). The top 10 players and ties, excluding Bahrain national team players, will qualify for the KHT, which is scheduled to be played November 28 to 30 at the same world-class course.
A cut will be made after 36 holes this weekend for the leading 50 gross scores and ties. At the end of the three days of play and in the event of a tie in the lowest gross total, the winner shall be decided by a sudden death play-off over the 18th hole. The organising committee may add other holes if the tie is not decided after two play-off holes.
Last year’s Bahrain Amateur Open was won by Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Attieh. He became the first non-Bahraini champion of the tournament. Ali Al Kuwari triumphed in its inaugural edition in 2019, and then Ahmed Al Zayed won in 2020 and 2022. Khalifa Al Meraisi was the victor in the 2021 tournament.
Meanwhile, the BGA announced yesterday that Banz Group is the golden sponsor of the competition.
BGA chairman Major-General Ali bin Saqr Al Nuaimi expressed his thanks and appreciation to Banz Group and Banz Group CEO Jason Smith for their continued support of the federation’s activities, particularly the sixth Bahrain Amateur Open golf championship.
