CYCLING – EDOARDO Zambanini was the best finisher for Team Bahrain Victorious yesterday in the Il Lombardia one-day race in Italy, held as part of this year’s UCI World Tour.
The 118th edition of the historic event featured a revamped course, stretching 255 kilometres with an elevation gain of 4,547 metres.
Il Lombardia marked the final ‘monument’ of the cycling season. ‘Monuments’ in the sport are the most important single-day races, together with the UCI world championships.
There are five ‘monuments’ in international cycling’s annual calendar. They are the Milan–San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris–Roubaix, Liege–Bastogne–Liège, and Il Lombardia.
Zambanini came 22nd overall amongst a field of 175 elite men’s riders. He finished eight minutes behind race winner Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates, who had a winning time of six hours four minutes and 58 seconds.
Bahrain Victorious teammate Santiago Buitrago came 86th, while Wout Poels finished 105th and Matej Mohoric 111th.
The team’s three other participants, Antonio Tiberi, Damiano Caruso, and Andrea Pasqualon, did not finish.
Bahrain Victorious are now headed for races in Asia this week.
