HORSERACING – AL Ameed, owned by Horse Welfare Authority chairman Shaikh Duaij bin Salman Al Khalifa, put in a strong performance yesterday in an international horserace held in the UK.
The three-year-old, ridden by jockey Harry Davies, claimed second place in the Unibet/Breeders Backing Racing EBF Novice Stakes, held at Kempton Park Racecourse.
Al Ameed was the early leader in the 12-furlong event but fell marginally behind over the final furlong. The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained contender eventually finished three-and-three-quarter lengths behind winner Shader, racing for owners Juddmonte, trainers John and Thady Gosden, and jockey Kieran Shoemark. Cadogan Place finished third, also for Juddmonte, Andrew Balding, and David Probert.
Comet Chaser – another three-year-old challenger with a Bahrain connection – was classified in fourth place for owner Fawzi Abdulla Nass, trainer George Scott, and jockey Callum Shepherd.
In another race yesterday at Kempton, Midnight Drive finished fourth in the Unibet More Boosts In More Races Handicap, held across eight furlongs.
The three-year-old, owned by Isa bin Salman Educational Charitable Trust chairman, Labour Fund (Tamkeen) chairman, and Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and trained by Clive Cox, was ridden yesterday by Richard Kingscote.
Appeal To Glory won for Ms A Lau, Ed Walker, and Tom Marquand, while Willy Campbell took second place for N Pickett, Sylvester Kirk, and Liam Keniry. Shelbourne, racing for Keith Breen, George Scott, and Shepherd, was third just ahead of Midnight Drive.
