HORSERACING – ECONOMICS, owned by Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, powered yesterday to an impressive victory in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano Group Two race, held in Deauville, France.
Jockey Tom Marquand rode the William Haggas-trained victor to first place to headline a series of fine results yesterday by Bahrain-owned horses.
Two others were winners in events in the UK, including another horse owned by Shaikh Isa, Triumph of Peace, who won at Salisbury Racecourse; and Nazron, owned by Hasan Mefareh Alajmi, who triumphed at Royal Windsor Racecourse.
Almanjoor, meanwhile, finished as runner-up for Bahrain’s Al Mohamediya Racing at Beverley Racecourse.
In Deauville, Economics clinched first with a strong showing in the 10-furlong race, which featured seven contenders. The three-year-old was in the chase of the leader entering the final furlong, and then took the front over the final 110 yards en route to securing the victory.
Economics won by two lengths ahead of Jayarebe, owned by Iraj Parvizi, trained by Brian Meehan, and ridden yesterday by Sean Levey; while Almaqam came third for Shaikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, Ed Walker, and William Buick.
At Salisbury, Shaikh Isa’s other steed, Triumph of Peace, also trained by Haggas, was steered to the victory in the Sorvio Insurance Brokers Novice Stakes by jockey Jim Crowley.
They were in touch with the leaders early on in the seven-furlong ride and then led two furlongs out. They then did enough to finish at the front of the 10-runner field, enjoying a half-length’s gap from runner-up Upscale, competing for Juddmonte, Andrew Balding, and David Probert. Bamburgh came third for Susan and John Waterworth and Partners, Charlie Johnston, and Ryan Moore.
At Windsor, Roger Varian-trained Nazron took the win with Daniel Muscutt in the saddle in the five-furlong Tote Placepot Leg 1 Racing League R22 Handicap, which featured 11 competitors.
The three-year-old was followed by Spring Is Sprung, racing for John Blackburn and Partner, Paul Midgley, and Alistair Rawlinson; while Good Earth was third for Mrs H Lloyd-Herrington, Michael Herrington, and David Allan.
At Beverley, Almanjoor gave Al Mohamediya Racing, Richard Fahey, and Oisin Orr a solid second place in the Beverley Racecourse Sculpture Trail Nursery Handicap, held over five furlongs with 10 runners.
Go On Rosie won for Tom Goodair and Jimmy Kay, Nigel Tinkler, and Rowan Scott; while Solar Biricz came third for UK Farming Renewable Energy, Brian Ellison, and Ben Robinson.
