HORSERACING – Mutasarref triumphed in the Bahrain Turf Club Desmond Stakes (Group Three) race – the latest event in the Dublin To Bahrain Series 2024, held at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland.
Jockey Colin Keane rode the six-year-old to the victory for owner Eleanora Kennedy and trainer G M Lyons.
They started the eight-furlong event with a strong stride and were in touch with the leaders early on. Mutasarref was then hit on the nose by a rival’s whip under two furlongs out, but then led narrowly with a furlong to go. They held on until the finish, and claimed first place by a half-length from runner-up Mountain Bear, racing for owners Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, and trainer A P O’Brien, with Wayne Lordan in the saddle.
Lord Massusus finished in third place for John N Bourke, Joseph G Murphy, and Gary Carroll.
There were eight runners in the field.
With the result, Mutasarref joined Tokenomics and Longbourn as the winners from the other two races held so far in this year’s Dublin to Bahrain Series. The first events were both handicap races. The next in the series is another handicap race, scheduled for August 22 (handicap zero to 90 for fillies).
Three other events will follow to wrap up this year’s Dublin to Bahrain Series, including The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (Group One) on September 14, and The Bahrain Turf Club Knockaire Stakes (Listed) and Bahrain Turf Club October Premier Handicap, both on October 20.
All events are to be held at Leopardstown.
The prestigious Dublin To Bahrain Series features a seven-race calendar for 2024. The winners of the four handicap events will be automatically eligible to compete in the Bahrain Turf Series as part of the highly anticipated 2024-25 season at Bahrain Turf Club.
The upcoming campaign heralds in a new chapter in the evolution and growth of horseracing in the kingdom, with the installation of floodlights and an expansion of the Bahrain Turf Series to an overall value of over $1million.
