‘Kalki 2898 AD’ by Nag Ashwin is an intricately made epic that seamlessly blends Indian mythology and science fiction into a true movie spectacle.
After a handful of lacklustre and disappointing entries for Prabhas in the past few years, Kalki 2898 AD seems like the movie that will restore him to true superstar status in India.
The brainchild of director Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD features some of the best VFX, CGI and world-building of any movie released in 2024. Not just from India, but Hollywood too. The amount of care and detail put into every frame makes the viewers fully immersed in the post-apocalyptic world of Kalki.
The film also features some standout performances, especially from Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. The two acting juggernauts truly embody their characters, with each of them bringing a special something to the screen. Prabhas and Deepika Padukone also do commendable jobs in their roles, but it wasn't anything special.
Kalki 2898 AD is the most expensive Indian movie ever, with a reported budget of 600 crores INR ($72 million). Now this may not seem like much when compared to Hollywood blockbusters, but quality-wise, this Indian production has vastly superseded anything that Hollywood has put out this year.
The story mixes together Indian mythology and science fiction to give us something that Indian audiences have never seen before. The only fault in this is the fact that you may need to know certain elements regarding Indian mythology to understand everything.
Overall, Kalki 2898 AD is an absolute entertainer and we can't wait for the second part to come out.
P.S. There is no post-credit scene in the movie, but a handful of cameos by major actors and personalities are a fun addition to the movie. Be on the lookout for them.
