Music plays a major role in supporting a nation’s struggle for freedom, and is an integral part of culture that reflects the identity, history, hopes and challenges faced by people struggling to achieve justice. As is known, art of all kinds is considered a powerful weapon to convey powerful and influential messages to win public opinion and raise the morale of people living under occupation.
National music helps strengthen national identity and enhance cultural and historical awareness between generations. Patriotic songs also tell stories of struggle and resistance, and remind us of important historical events and heroic figures.
Many patriotic songs also talk about resistance and steadfastness in the face of occupation. These songs encourage people to continue fighting for their rights and freedom, and maintain the spirit of resistance. It plays a role in strengthening solidarity and unity between Palestinians at home and abroad.
National songs bring people together on public and private occasions, and create a state of solidarity and communal cohesion. Patriotic songs are also a means to convey political and social messages in an influential and emotional way. Through words and melodies, music can reach wide segments of people and arouse in them feelings of sympathy and solidarity with the cause.
Some notable examples in this context include the works of artists such as Mahmoud Darwish, who wrote many patriotic poems that were composed and sung, as well as Marcel Khalife, who performed many patriotic songs that became a symbol of the Palestinian struggle.
Locally, we must praise the initiative of the brilliant Bahraini artist Najma Abdullah, who presented a beautiful patriotic song entitled ‘Call’, in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and in support of the people of Gaza. This song is written by Hassan Kamal and music composed and arranged by Khalifa Ziman.
As Najma says, this artistic work is only a humble participation and expression of the artists’ solidarity with the injustice and genocide that the Palestinian people are suffering from. It is a call for mercy and compassion and to convey our voices and feelings to the whole world.
I hope that we will see more artistic works that support this just cause, calling on artists in Bahrain, the Arabian Gulf and the Arab countries to perform such national artistic works out of patriotic pride and a purely literary commitment towards this cause.
Everyone has followed the sympathy of the people all over the world and how this war has stirred feelings towards barbaric attacks and genocide since last October. Everyone is following the marches and demonstrations in the streets, universities and schools, and the sympathy of sports fans in various sports and others, not to mention the fact that some countries have severed diplomatic relations with Israel.
This saga has caused a major political upheaval, giving great momentum and sympathy to the just cause, which we hope will find its way to a permanent solution, achieve a comprehensive political solution, and establish an independent state with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital.
