‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is a crazy, bullet-laden, gas-powered and bonkers ride that falters in some places.
Set as a prequel to 2015’s widely beloved, Oscar-winning hit Mad Max: Fury Road, ‘Furiosa’ tells the origin story of Imperator Furiosa, played in the 2015 movie by Charlize Theron, and in this latest iteration by Anya Taylor-Joy.
George Miller brings his signature brand of crazed energy back to the franchise he originated, with some standout performances from both Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth.
Taylor-Joy plays Furiosa with a quiet intensity, perfectly in line with her motivations in the movie. The character has about 10 lines in total, but it never feels like we’re missing out on something. Her silence seems to be justified.
The one thing that the 2015 movie does better is the story. It felt complete, with a beginning, middle and end. All the characters had a proper ending. This time around, however, you’re left feeling incomplete once the movie ends. There’s no satisfying conclusion, and the same goes for the climax. It just isn’t as satisfying as last time.
Hemsworth is a much better antagonist in this edition. Every time he’s on screen, it’s his show. Sporting prosthetic make-up that makes him nearly unrecognisable, Hemsworth is a storm of chaotic energy and a six-pack that is always on display. He also sports his native Australian accent, in what feels like a nice homage to the origins of the Mad Max franchise.
The action and car-chase sequences are, as always, mind-blowing. It’s over the top without any apologies or restraint.
In total, ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is a fun weekend watch, that doesn’t rise up to the levels set by its predecessor, but makes a valiant effort.
