CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Antonio Tiberi put on a world-class performance yesterday in the seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia.
The Italian was classified an impressive sixth in the leg’s 40.6-kilometre individual time trial, finishing a minute and 21 seconds behind winner Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates.
Teammate Jasha Sutterlin of Germany was 16th on the day’s ranking, while Austrian Rainer Kepplinger came 29th and Italian Damiano Caruso 35th.
The Team Bahrain Victorious squad were rounded out by Italian Edoardo Zambanini in 47th, his compatriot Andrea Pasqualon in 81st, and German Phil Bauhaus in 124th.
Following Tiberi’s outstanding result, he climbed 13 places from 21st to eighth on the race’s general classification for the Maglia Rosa or leader’s “pink jersey”. Tiberi also rose four places to third overall in the ranking for the Maglia Bianca or “white jersey”, worn by the best young rider.
In the points classification for the Maglia Ciclamino or “purple jersey”, Bauhaus dropped one place to 10th.
The Giro d’Italia, the first of three Grand Tour events on the 2024 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Tour calendar, continues today with a 152km eighth stage, starting from Spoleto and ending at Prati di Tivo.
