The US still believes that it rules the world. It is very dangerous and leads to tension everywhere, a US economist has warned.
When Washington realises the need to interact with Russia, China and other countries of the multipolar world, a new era of peaceful co-operation will begin, American economist, professor at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs told RIA Novosti.
“We know that trade tensions are actually the result of US attempts to slow down China’s economic progress. This is part of the overall attempts by the US to maintain hegemony or unipolarity in a world where multipolarity has already become a reality. Thus, the same tensions that led to the war in Ukraine are reflected in the strained relations between the United States and China,” Sachs said on the sidelines of the China Development Forum in Beijing.
The expert believes that the solution may be the adoption of multipolarity by the US.
“Right now, the American political class is still disconnected from the basic facts of the world. The US still believes that it rules the world. Of course, this is extremely naive and incredibly dangerous, it leads to tension everywhere,” Sachs added.
The expert expressed hope that the US will soon realise that it needs to interact with Russia, China and other major forces of the multipolar world.
“When they do, we will begin a new era of peaceful co-operation. So I am sure that a lot depends on whether American politics will come to understand the new realities of the world economy and world politics,” he concluded.
Relations between Beijing and Washington have significantly ‘cooled down’ during the administration of President Donald Trump, who launched a ‘trade war’ with China.
With the arrival of Joe Biden, the situation did not improve, but even worsened – a number of incidents, including the visit to Taiwan by then Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and the destruction of a Chinese balloon by the US in American airspace, led to a new round of diplomatic confrontation between both sides.
