A university student in Shanghai was recently discovered to have been secretly living under a shopping mall's stairs for six months.
The student had reportedly set up a living space for himself underneath the stairs, even using an inverter to power his electronic devices.
According to reports, the student had been caught by a security guard earlier but was allowed to live there after the student explained his situation to the guard.
The student stated to the guard that he needed a place to stay while he was studying for the highly competitive 'gaokao' exams.
The 'gaokao' is the national undergraduate admission exams in China. According to the security guard who allowed him to stay, the student had promised to leave the space after the exams were over.
But according to reports, the student continued staying under the stairs long after the exams were over.
The student was eventually arrested by the police on October 30, after he was discovered by another less sympathetic guard.
